Things that grow too fast are not healthy or sustainable. With growth comes a slowdown to speed up cycle that must be honored in order for your organization to digest and build on change. If you try to grow too fast you are in for more than growing pains. It often leads to undesirable symptoms like communication breakdowns, staff turnover, and cash flow issues.
Here’s a technique I use to help the business owners stay out of overwhelm and keep moving forward in a healthy sustainable way. During your planning process set your longer term goals – typically 3 to 5 years, then decide where you would have to be in terms of your progress towards those goals in 1 year. That becomes your major focus – but it’s still too big. Next, decide how you can get to that outcome in 4 increments, and make those your quarterly goals, which are the targets you want to grow and plateau to. Sprint to each quarterly goal then rest, celebrate, re-balance, refocus and on to the next quarterly milestone.
Don’t underestimate the importance of the celebration. It is in fact a powerful method of conditioning your brain for success. Go ahead and try it today – none of this stuff works unless you do.
