Have you ever been fired or let go from a job in your life only to find yourself in a much better place a short time later? Maybe it’s time to get fired!
New beginnings always happen directly after another thing has ended, and getting fired can be a real wake up call. I experienced this only once in my life, but it was profound. I was working at an all-night gas bar when I was 18 years old, when the boss walked in one morning and fired me right at the end of my midnight shift.
I won’t get into why – it’s what happened directly after that really matters. I was shocked – I went through all the stages of grief; beginning with denial, then anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. When I reached acceptance, I found myself in a place of empowerment, where I could forgive myself, let go of the past and begin the process of designing my new future again. I took my lessons – good and bad, and began newly on a better path.
Today, as the owner of my business – each year I give myself a performance review, and if I’m not meeting my expectations or hitting my numbers, I look for things that need to change, pick some strategies and ask myself if I’m ready to commit to making the improvements.
I’ve only had to fire myself once – but the new guy that showed up has been much better.
