Somebody asked me recently what they should know about staying focused on a project. Here’s what I told them:
Have a solid 90 day plan – This sounds obvious but it’s really easy for the busyness to take over your day. Why 90 days? Because it’s a short enough time to keep you enthusiastic and produce a significant result – but not so long that you lose interest. Place only one project at a time into the 90 day plan.
Exercise discipline over your plan – Create the daily habits that will move you forward and then build them into your routine. The key here is to grow the habits over time and to associate them regularly with getting what you really want versus what you are giving up to do them.
Track your data – Decide early on how you will measure your progress, keep it simple, and make adjustments as you go. There’s no use tracking data unless you are using the feedback to provide direction for changes. Keeping in touch with your progress will keep you grounded and focused
Now go out there and play hard!
