There is a scientific formula for creating most things – so before getting too fancy with anything new -make sure you have a good handle on the fundamental steps. In other words – first get the science right and then go ahead and turn it into art by making it your own.
Begin with a template or a checklist, practice it until you understand the steps and are able to achieve consistent results, then practice some more until the steps and results come naturally.
There are 4 stages of learning:
- Unconscious Incompetence – You don’t know what you don’t know – get the template
- Conscious Incompetence – You know what you don’t know – learn the template
- Conscious Competence – You know but you have to think about it – practice the template
- Unconscious Competence – You know and you can do it without thinking about it – MASTERY
Once you’ve achieved the level 4 stage you can begin to change it up a bit and make it your own. Sales scripts are a good business example. Most people don’t like scripts – they don’t feel authentic, which of course is true – but true for a reason – because you don’t know what you don’t know. It’s foreign to you, so of course it feels uncomfortable.
Working through those feelings is how we become successful at anything. Getting on the other side of discomfort is where personal and business growth occurs. If you are getting good results already – without much effort – you’re probably not challenging yourself enough. Maybe it’s time to dial things up.
