Engagement has become a major buzz word in business, and the undeniable challenge for most is that you can’t fake it, you can’t buy a piece of software to create it, and you can’t command and control it. If you want to enjoy the many fruits of engagement – you have to be prepared to do some things differently. That said…it’s totally doable and I have some tips for you how to get started.
I’m always preaching ownership, and something all of us get to own is; how people are allowed to treat us. The reverse is also true. Others get to decide how they will allow themselves to be treated. Whether we’re conscious of it or not, it’s happening all the time, so the first step is to notice it.
For my wife Angie for instance, it seems to be difficult when I don’t communicate the right way with her. I say it “seems”, because really she’s just ignoring me until I get it right. We have been married for almost 26 years and I used to make the mistake of communicating with her by assuming (not knowing) what she needed – and as you might have guessed that didn’t work so well. One day I read a book called “The Five Love Languages” and I took the time to learn her language; and our communication has been much improved since. Get the picture?
The same is true about your employees. Everyone responds better to their own language, in a safe respectful environment where we’re living by our values.
