I just finished watching the playoff round of “The Open Championship” the third of four major tournaments in men’s professional golf for 2015. The mindset in any professional sport is critical, and the difference between winners and losers I’ve found is mental toughness.
There are many different aspects to mental toughness, but the ones I saw come out at St Andrew’s this past weekend were:
Put a number in your head that you think it will take to win. This is a fundamental of goal setting – to begin with the end I mind and then see your-self directing your energy towards bringing that result into your reality.
Staying Present and in the moment. Playing one hole at a time, seeing your opportunities and capitalizing on them without any distraction of what is coming, or what just happened.
Believe deeply in your-self. Know that you are worthy and capable of winning. That you’ve put in the hard work, preparing yourself and you deserve it as much as anyone in the field.
The parallels to running a business are obvious…work on these things and you’ll be playing with the pro’s!
