Excellence – what is it?
Excellence is often defined as consistent superior performance. It’s not about being superior to everyone else, it’s about living up to our own potential, honoring and demonstrating our own capabilities. Excellence is one of those character traits that say a lot about a person. Excellence is not a product of a single effort, or brought about on demand.
You live with excellence consistently or you’re easily discovered as a fraud. Are you often late, or do you leave early, do you cut corners, put things off, or come ill prepared. Lack of excellence in one area of your life is an indication of every other area. A lack of excellence becomes habitual – then becomes your reputation.
Jim Rohn used to say, “We know how you’ll take care of the big things, based on how you take care of the small things.” A guy says, “I’d put in more effort if I was getting paid more.” “Oh sure, we’re going to give you more responsibility!” She says, “I’d be a better leader if I had better people, but I just have these two working for me.” “Sure, you’re ready for your business to grow… come on!”
More will only make your existing character more evident. When we take care of the small things in an excellent manner we develop the habit of doing things excellently. The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of a chosen field or endeavor.
So, here’s the action I want you to do today. Today, be excellent – at everything you give your attention to. Begin the progressing continuous improvement effect of being a person of excellence, starting today.
