Here’s a question I get asked a lot…”How much time should I be spending at work”? Some business owners feel guilty for spending too many hours at work and others for not spending enough. Here is my answer and it might surprise you….
You should spend as little time as possible at work. If that sounds a little extreme, consider this, spending time is like spending money – if you keep spending it, one day you will surely run out. What you want to be doing is investing your time. What’s the difference you ask? By my definition – When you are spending your time you are using it up – it’s gone forever without a return. When you are investing your time, you are working on your business and in the long term you will get it back and more.
If you place a high value on your time – you will want to invest it by working on important, but not urgent activities like planning, training, building relationships and documenting systems. In the beginning we all have to work IN our business – but if you’ve been doing that for 10 or 20 years and you still have to ask yourself that question – maybe it’s time for a shift in your thinking.
