Do you want to stay on track and finish important work? You could hire a time management expert. But no expert is going to make you do what you aren’t willing to do.
I’m working with a guy who just learned that lesson big time. A breakthrough moment arrived when he became upset enough to do something about it. In that moment willingness was born. After all, if we’re going to change – we have to have a good enough reason right? One that outweighs the rewards we get from holding on to whatever stands in our way!
He had an unhealthy attraction to “Shiny Pennies”. Like many entrepreneurs he was easily distracted by new ideas. He told me about a couple of them and I had to admit they were good ideas! They were just not things that needed to be done right now.
So I suggested to him that he starts what I call a “backburner” list. Just a place to catch any ideas that he thought were good but weren’t in line with his current short term goals. He bought a notebook to capture and keep them in. Now that his brain trusts they are in a safe place – it can let go of them. Within a week he called me, delirious about how it was working. “It’s like this great burden has been lifted from me”!
He’ll never be short of good go to ideas for his future planning either. I use this myself and it works brilliantly. Powerful things are often simple; most people just don’t do them.
